Hi Naomi!! I agree that America is a female name... I'm glad it's America and not Columbus, but they have cities I believe in Ohio, Georgia, Texas, Mississippi and Indiana that's named Columbus. I guess in tribute to the discoverer of America. Neat, huh.
Hope you are doing well. have a great rest of the week!
What a strange looking map.
I like the name America. I guess I'm just used to it.
I think America is much better than Columbus. Thank you for all the information. I had never heard some of that before.
If they named the people after his last name instead of his first name, Americans would be known as "Vespuccians". lol
Quite fascinanting! Thanks for sharing!
I wish my students were as interested in American history as you are.
They did manage to name the capitol city after him: Washington, District of Columbia. (Washingon DC).
this is off the subject but I'm doing my bathroom in early spain decor-not Mexico but the spanish decor.
I adore the history of maps and to see how the boundaries of the world have shifted over the centuries. What a wonderful post you have up this day.
I always thought it more accurate to say that Columbus was the first, albeit by misdirection, to record the discovery of the continent, merely due to curious evidence that the Vikings may have explored parts of the new worlds a few centuries prior.
I think Amerigo Vespucci's cousin, Marco, was married to the beautiful Simonetta, the inspiration behind most of Botticelli's paintings and who died young, but still haunted the artist.
I always find it fascinating how things link in this world.
Peace and Blessings, my Friend, Naomi~
