  • It seems like he is getting some valuable life experience instead of war experience.  He also seems to be getting some direction for his life.  I think this voluntary service instead of military service is a good idea for some people.

  • Yes, three was the brother’s marriage story.

  • When I was younger I wanted to work with the PEACE Corps.  My father absolutely did not want me to do so.  He did tell me of another place I could work  VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America).  Basically they do a lot of the same type work only with VISTA I would be staying in the United States.  As it happened I did nether.  I married at 17 and lost my husband in the service, married again at 19 and bought a house, had two kids, two dogs, two cars…the usual standard for someone that didn’t attend college for very long.  Doing volunteer work is an education in itself, much more than you can every learn in a classroom.  Looking back, I think that is the one choice I might have made differently.  But I was blessed later in life with doing work with the Boy Scouts of America working with inner city children, followed by Mission Arlington where again I worked with more children.  I hope that  in some way doing those things made up for not committing to two years abroad. I am proud of your young man.  By actually being there and doing that he will have enriched his teaching abilities ten fold. ~ mom
